Just the 2 of us...

My kids are seriously obsessed with each other! They are so funny, they can have hours of fun all by themselves, just the 2 of them. I love to peek in on their little pretend world when they let me (their world is only for fun toddlers, no boring grown-ups allowed :). Today they were outside playing on the slide in the backyard. I peeked out the back door and heard Kinley saying "Oh, I need to catch my baby" while holding her arms outstretched at the bottom of the slide. I assumed she was talking about an imaginary friend or a baby doll. I said "What's your baby's name?" She looked at me like I had just asked if the sky was blue and said "MOM! His NAME is MASON." (Duh, how could I not know his name?) I said "Oh, Mason's your baby?". "Yes Mom, Mason is MY baby and I am his Mommy. I am helping him on the slide." Then she stretched her arms out while Mason slid down, crashing into her and landing in a bear-hug. They gave each other hugs and kisses while giggling, then Mason ran around and climbed the slide to do it all over again. They thought this was sooo funny, and of course to me, only a spectator to their wonderful world of imaginary play, it really was. I love my babies!

I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more...

Okay, no I wouldn't. But I DID run 13.1 miles, and I would definitely do it again! Jami, Jeni, and I ran the Provo River Half Marathon this morning. We got up at 3am (yeah, as if that's not enough to convince us that we were crazy) to get ready for the big event :). I picked the girls up at 4 and we headed to the Riverwoods shopping center to park and shuttle to the starting line up the canyon. We were a little early, we got to the starting line and it was pitch-black, we could only see one porta-potty in the bus' headlights. We wandered around in the dark for a little while, but eventually the sun came up and we began the race at 6:30. Jami was out of sight before we had even run 10 yards - she was on a serious mission! Jeni and I ran along at a good pace (for us) and shared entertaining stories for 2 hours and 15 minutes. It actually flew by, and we had so much fun! I totally want to do another one! I really didn't have a time-goal in mind, I just hoped to beat my SLC half marathon time, which we did by 10 minutes. That was enough to make me happy! Jami finished in under 2 hours, way to go Jami! After we got our drop bags we decided to go through a couple stores in the Riverwoods. I was pretty gross, so after a little shopping I decided we had better head home to shower. We got to the car in the deserted parking lot - all of the runners had left as soon as they were done I guess. We buckled the kids in, decided to go to Wendy's for Frosty's, put the key in the ignition, and... nothing. I guess in my half-awake stupor this morning I had left my headlights on and the car battery had died. :) Figures. We couldn't get a hold of anyone that we knew in Provo (yes, Benji and Ashley, THAT's what we were calling you about :), but then we remembered that we had roadside assistance. We called and they said they would be about 30 minutes. Not quite. Over an hour later they showed up, jumped the car, and we were finally on our way. We did stop at Wendy's for lunch, got home and showered, then the kids and I took VERY long naps for the rest of the afternoon. Aside from the car troubles, it was a great Saturday! Thanks for training with me and running today girls! You were both awesome!

In other news... it turns out that my poor little old digital camera has taken it's last picture, it is officially dead. It won't even turn on. SO, yea for me I get a new camera, but I won't have any pictures to post for a week while I wait for it to ship to me. I don't know HOW you all will live :)

Why is it ALWAYS Wal-Mart?!?

The other day I took the kids to Wal-Mart after a day at the Dinosaur Museum (which was, by the way crowded with wall-to-wall people, and all-in-all a disappointment, if you want my opinion). We just ran in for a few things. My niece Maddie was with me, she has been here all week helping me with the kids while I have been catching up on work (she is AWESOME, seriously a LIFESAVER!). We loaded the kids into the cart and headed in. Since we only had a few essentials to get, we decided to take a detour down the craft aisle to find a fun project for the girls to do during Mason's naptime. We were looking at flowers and McKinley was right next to me showing me some ribbon. A second later, she was gone. I looked up the next aisle, where an employee happened to be stocking the shelves. She saw me and asked if I was looking for a little girl in a pink dress. I said I was and she pointed me in McKinley's direction. I turned around and went one aisle the other way and there she was. I brought her back to the cart where Maddie and Mason were waiting and told her that she needed to stay by me. I explained that it scares me when I can't see her because I don't want to lose her. She said she understood, so we continued to look for flowers. A second later she was gone again! I looked down a couple of aisles in the direction she had gone before. No McKinley. I called her name as I went in the other direction. No McKinley. I happened accross the same employee who had seen her the first time. She asked if I had lost her again. Yes, again. Ugh. I was a little annoyed and kind of panicking at this point. She never wanders far. The employee helped me look up and down aisles one direction while I went the other direction. I started to really worry, but then I saw her coming my direction holding a man's hand. She let go and ran to me. I was a little concerned with how friendly she had seemed to a stranger. I knelt down in the aisle and explained to her again that I was worried and it scares me when she wanders away. I (nicely but firmly) lectured her about staying by Mommy and not talking to strangers. I asked her why she went so far. She told me that she saw her teacher and wanted to say 'hi'. Then I looked up and realized that the nice man who had brought her back to me was her Sunbeam teacher. Oooops, so it wasn't a stranger. I had been so distracted by losing her and so relieved to find her, I hadn't even noticed whose hand she was holding. I felt a little better that she hadn't been talking to strangers, although I was embarrassed that I for one had been caught losing my child at Wal-Mart, and second that I had lectured her in front of him about strangers without realizing he was standing there. I thanked him for bringing her to me, then told her to tell me when she wanted to go say 'hi' to someone. Well, that ordeal was over with, and that's enough for one Wal-Mart trip, right? Not quite. We made it to the check-out line where McKinley decided that she HAD to go potty right then. Luckily Maddie was there, and we were right by the restrooms, so Maddie took her to the potty. As they walked away I could hear the sound of water splashing. Oh no! McKinley! No, not McKinley. It was Mason! Either his diaper was full to capacity or he was sitting funny and had a gap, but he had peed and it had poured out of his diaper, all over his pants, and onto the floor. I was so embarrassed. On top of that, he was stinky. Yea. Maddie and McKinley returned and Maddie helped me unload the cart onto the checkout stand. I looked up to see McKinley picking up Skittles off of the floor. She didn't really just eat one. Or did she? I quickly popped her mouth open. No Skittles. Breath check. Yep, lemon Skittle. GROSS! I lectured her about eating things off of the floor (haven't we had this discussion a thousand times? Why does food on the floor still look appealing?). And, to top it all off, I had to change Mason on the tailgate of my car in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Since he didn't have extra clothes, he had to ride home in just a diaper. That's when I started to wonder, why is it always at Wal-Mart? Any other grocery store I can usually keep it together, but at Wal-Mart it all hits the fan and we fall apart.I was almost too embarrassed to share this story, except that it was too real (and for us too normal) not to share. Hope you can relate, but maybe it's just me! Needless to say, I will be doing my Wal-Mart runs alone from now on.

Now I know my A, B, C's and DD's

Janette and I were shopping at the mall the other day with our 12 kids... okay there were only 3 of them, but if felt like 12! They played musical chairs with the strollers, dropped pizza on the floor, and reaked havoc on the store displays :). A pretty typical shopping trip with 2 two-year-olds and a three-year-old. Finally, both of the little boys ended up in my double stroller and while Kinley pushed Janette's umbrella stroller. We stopped in Charlotte Russe to check out their accessories. While I admired some earrings that Janette had found and we debated as to weather they were too big, too flashy, or possibly just right, we heard a lady say 'oh, I don't think you're supposed to do that'. Oooops, we had been so caught up in our earring debate that we had ignored our kids momentarily. This is what happens when we turn our backs for a second...

The boys had emptied 2 brighly colored bra racks that happened to be within their reach. Mason had a death-grip on a hot-pink bra - I think they were discussing cup sizes?
Sadly, our first thought was 'this is totally blog-worthy, let's take pictures!'. Then we cleaned up the mess, of course. I think Janette was considering this one :)...
McKinley ... modeling?... I'm not really sure about the pose here, but she was dancing around the store in the hot-pink bra
The boys in a rare cute moment
Yes, I think those earrings will be perfect after all. Cha-ching. The boys went back to their game of hitting each other while we paid for our purchases.
All said and done, it was actually a quite successful (and entertaining) shopping trip. Thanks for the fun day Janette!

The Grand Tour

Sadly, we had to take Austin to the airport yesterday so that he could return home. We had so much fun with him, we are so glad that he was able to come visit us! We were pretty early heading up to the airport, so we decided to detour through downtown Salt Lake City. I didn't realize that Austin had never had the Grand Tour of downtown SLC! We did a quick version of it, since it was SERIOUSLY hot! We toured the Church History Museum, the Tabernacle, and checked out the gorgeous temple grounds. I am glad that he was able to see some of the rich history of downtown. We miss Austin already and can't wait for his next visit!

Some McKinleyisms...

I was laying in McKinley's bed with her a couple of nights ago at bedtime. I had been having a very nostalgic week, so this was how our conversation went:

Me: McKinley
McKinley: Yes Mom?
Me: Could you just stop growing? You are just getting too big, I want you to stay my little McKinley forever and ever.
McKinley: Mom, you're right. I should stop growing. If I don't, I might get too big and I won't fit through the door.

Hmmmm... very true, but not quite where I was going with it. I love the things 3-year-olds say! Life is so simple to them, why do grown-ups make everything so complicated?

Yesterday we were making zucchini bread for some neighbors. We hadn't made it before, and apparently McKinley hadn't heard of it either. She watched me curiously and helped me add flour and sugar. Finally she said, "Mom, why do you want to put a bikini in the bread?" I explained to her that is was actually a vegetable called zucchini, and then showed her what it looked like before I shredded it up. I think she understood, although she is still referring to it as "bikini bread". :)

"Horsey Rides"

McKinley went into Mason's room when he woke up this morning (as usual). I was a few minutes behind her (again, as usual), but I could hear them over the baby monitor and Mason kept saying "horsey ride, horsey ride." What in the world are they doing in there? I came in to find them straddling the side-rail of the crib in true 'horsey ride' fashion. They really can entertain themselves with anything, anywhere!

Sometimes that mountain you've been climbing is just a grain of sand...

So I love Carrie Underwood's "So Small," but this is no grain of sand. This is one of my FAVORITE things to do in the world. In college, Matt and I went rock climbing in the local canyons almost every day after work with our friends. We LOVED it, my days revolved around it, I even (occasionally) ditched class for it. However, as life moves on and other things (family, kids, etc.) become the priorities, fun hobbies (like rock climbing) become just that. Hobbies. Occasional indulgences. Well, last summer when my brother Austin came to visit us we decided to take him climbing for his first time. We figured it was something fun to do that he hadn't tried before. He loved it so much that when he got home he joined an indoor climbing gym and has been practicing all year. He came ready to climb. We loaded up our kids and joined some climbing friends of ours from college (who happen to have two kids exactly our kids' ages) and headed for the canyon. We found a great spot just off of a paved trail so the kids could run around (usually we have to worry about them falling off of cliffs and they have to be harnessed in, so this was a nice change). The down-side was, however, that the easiest climb on this route was a 5.10b, then after that a 5.12a. Sooo... not a great route to start on after a year of non-climbing for me. Needless to say, I didn't make it all the way to the top, which is a blow to my competative ego, but I did get a great workout in the meantime. Matt and Austin were the only ones that day to make it all the way. Matt even messed around on the 5.12 and busted some pretty awesome moves (if I do say so myself :). We even let the kiddos mess around, they both thought they were sooo big! They were so proud of themselves. Unfortunately, now that I have been once this summer, I am an addict. I think we'll have to get a babysitter one Saturday morning and go for a good long climb - without the little monkeys :). Enjoy the pictures!

Austin... mentally preparing?

Austin climbing... woo hoo!

Matt on belay... with Mason's help?

Mason really enjoyed the Camelbak

She starting out climbing so seriously

But then ended up enjoying just swinging from the rope :)

Mason wasn't too sure about the rope swinging part, but once he got down he wanted to go again :)

Like father, like son

We finished the day by cooling off in a nearby river... soooo refreshing!

Just can't get enough!

Have I mentioned that we LOVE summer?!? We went boating on Utah Lake with my brother and our neighbors, Ryan and Alecia, and their kids last Friday. Even though Utah Lake really isn't the prettiest lake, it was still pretty fun!

El Capitan :)

McKinley LOVES boating!

Austin's first ride on the ski bob (aka the water weenie :)

McKinley and Dallin are too silly!

Mason and Uncle Austin enjoying the ride

Mason thinks he is TOO COOL!

Happy Pioneer Day!

Although I maintain that Pioneer Day is not a real holiday (if you are NOT from Utah, you know what I am talking about), I have to say that I do love this holiday. It is a great time to reflect on our pioneer heritage, and the sacrifices of our ancestors. And of course, it is also a great excuse for a summer BBQ with the family! My brother Austin flew in from CA to spend the weekend with us before EFY. It was fun to have him here to share in the festivities. We attended the Bountiful Pioneer Day Parade on the 23rd (which the kids LOVED since their cousins were in the parade), then spent the 24th at Lisa's BBQ-ing, swimming, and just having fun with the family. That evening we went to a baseball game and enjoyed an awesome fireworks display afterwards. What a great day! I thought that I had left my camera at home during the parade and swimming, so no photos of those events, but I found my camera in the car on the way to the ballgame, so there are a few photos from the good old stadium.

Mason getting what he deserves from Uncle Greggie :)

McKinley loves her BROTHER! I love their hugs!

Tyler with the kiddos - and Kinley just being Kinley!

It is a far, far better place...

I am pretty sure if Dickens was referring to heaven, he surely meant somewhere like Bear Lake (sorry Jane, I don't share your loyalty to CA). I absolutely LOVE Bear Lake. Every year it is by far the vacation that I look forward to the most. We go with Matt's whole family up to Lisa's cabin for the week. We love to spend time with Matt's family, and my kids love every minute of attention from Grandma and Grandpa, their Aunts and Uncles, and OF COURSE their fun cousins. We spend the entire week out on the lake boating, wakeboarding, skiing, (wake) surfing, tubing, and just enjoying the beautiful water and warm sun. In the evenings we took the kids for 4-wheeler rides, enjoyed shakes at LaBeau's, and even hiked around some ice caves (thanks to Greg for the fun idea!). We had so much fun, I didn't have time to take pictures of everything! However, be forewarned, there are a TON of pictures in this post. Sorry! Words just don't do Bear Lake justice, it is so beautiful! Awwww... Grandparents :) Cute cousins... I love that my kids have such wonderful cousins! Matt and his cute parents Is Mason a mini-me or what? McKinley took her job as the flag-holder VERY seriously Matt and Mason on the ski bob - Mason was obsessed with his lifejacket! He even wore it in the cabin! We had to hide it when we got home! Mommy and McKinley bobbing My poor little ones are worn out! I love those tired faces! Mason getting ready to wake surf with Matt - we have video and pictures of him actually surfing, but I couldn't upload them. He was so funny, he stood there on the surfboard with water rushing past him saying "cheese!"
McKinley loves to dance! This is her shaking it on Lisa and Greg's boat :)

Some clarification needed...

Last night we were playing Mario Kart on the wii with my brother while McKinley watched. There is a little character named King Boo (who happens to look like a ghost) who kept beating me at the game. I kept trying to outrace the little ghost. I finally did and Kinley was excited for me, she said "Yea Mom! You beat the Holy Ghost!" Hmmmm... that may need some further explanation. I tried to explain that the Spirit is sometimes referred to as the Holy Ghost, but he is not actually a ghost. Hopefully that made sense, it's a hard one to explain, but I don't want her telling people that I beat the Holy Ghost! Thought I'd share that one for a laugh. I do have tons of pictures to post, watch for them this week!
